Durga Puja - The Beginning of Durgotsav

Durga is a Hindu goddess and Puja is worship. Durga Puja is a great Hindu festival that is celebrated in India and also the neighboring country Bangladesh and Nepal.  Durga Puja celebrates the victory of the goddess Durga over the demon king Mahishasura. This festival marks the victory of the goddess Durga in her battle against the evil power.

It is a centuries-old tradition.  This festival celebrated in India in the month of September or October.

It is total of 10 days festival but the last 5 days are the main. On Mahalaya the beginning of the festival when all the devotees welcome the goddess.

In Durga Puja, devotees use to worship of goddess Durga primarily but the celebration also includes other god and goddess-like Lakshmi (the goddess of wealth, prosperity), Saraswati (the goddess of knowledge, music, and art), Ganesha (the god of good beginnings)  and Kartikeya (the god of war). In Bengali traditions, these deities are considered to be Durga's children and Durga puja is believed to commemorate Durga's visit to her natal home with her children.

All the idols of this festival will be prepared in Kumortuli, a famous place in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.

Kumortuli is renowned for its sculpting prowess, manufacturing clay idols, and also export them in different countries.

It will be a great experience to take a tour of Kumortuli before celebrating centuries-old great Durga Puja.
