You can reach there

We have started from Kolkata by car to Asansol via Bardhaman and Durgapur to attend a friend’s marriage. After a long drive from Kolkata it was necessary to take break at Saktigarh. At Saktigarh you can take some refreshment. You can find some good sweet shops where you can get delicious sweets like “Laynkcha ” and “Sitabhog”.
After the break we have started for Asansol. Next day of the marriage ceremony we went for the Maithon Dam. It was almost 40-50kmns from main town of Asansol.
The name Maithan or Mai-Ka-Than (in Hindi) or
Ma-er-Than (in Bengali), Mai or Ma means Mother and Than means place so Maithan
refers to Mothers Place, here Maithan refers Hindu goddess Ma Kalyaneswari, near
by Hindu temple Kalyaneswari temple.

You can roam around the Mithon Dam but the best
attraction is the boat ride. There are few islands where you can go and spend
some good time but for that you need to book a boat. The agent of boats will
come to you and you need to choose the boat. They will charge according to the
distance of the island and the time you like to spend. In our case we have
chosen far island and spend almost 3 hours total and they charged 1000 rupees. We started our boat
ride with our majhi (helmsman).
It took almost 1hr to reach the island. After
anchor the boat we roam around the island. Anyway we were alone in the island.
We spent a great time there.
Don’t forget to bring the drinking water or small
snacks or drinks if you like to have. After spending a great time at Maithan
Dam we return to Asansol and the very next day we started for Kolkata.
